Parliament passes bill to repeal three farm laws

NEW DELHI: Parliament passed the bill to repeal the three farm laws via voice vote on Monday, the first day of the winter session.


Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar placed the Farm Laws Repeal Bill 2021 in Lok Sabha. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Choudhury demanded a discussion on the bill, but was disallowed by Speaker Om Birla.




A single bill was introduced to repeal the three laws- the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance, Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.


The bill was passed via voice vote amid sloganeering by opposition MPs.

Tomar placed the bill in the Raya Sabha shortly after the housed reconvened at 2pm.



Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar tabled the Farm Laws Repeal Bill 2021 in Rajya Sabha soon after resumption after the temporary adjournment.


Notably, the Bill was already circulated among Rajya Sabha members on Friday.

Before the motion was adopted for the passage the bill, RS Deputy Chairman Harivansh allowed Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to speak for two minutes.

Kharge was of the view that the government has taken back the three farm laws in view of the forthcoming elections in five states after reviewing the results of recent bypolls.

He also mentioned about the death of over 700 farmers in over a year during agitation against these laws.

When Kharge took more than the allocated time, the deputy chairman called Tomar to move the motion.

Tomar moved the motion and said while moving the bill for passage that the three laws were brought for the benefit of farmers.

The House passed the bill with voice vote amid protests by the Congress and TMC members. Dola Sen (TMC) and Nadimul Haque (TMC) were in the well to protest the passage of the bill without debate.

After the passage of the farm lasws bill, the House was adjourned for half an hour.

Meanwhile, the 'Farm Laws Repeal Bill 2021' was passed by the Lok Sabha today.

In an address to the nation a few days back, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repealing of the three Central farm laws on the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti. The bill was cleared by the Union Cabinet last week.

The winter session of Parliament is scheduled to conclude on 23 December.
